The appointment of incumbent National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Admiral (r) Fasih Bukhari remains controversial as the two opposition parties play politics in the court. PML-N seems unpleased with Bukhari’s appointment and blames then ruling party PPP-P for not taking the Opposition into confidence over the matter.

The Supreme Court on Monday questioned whether after the 18th Amendment president had the authority to appoint the NAB chairman and other such officials without having consulted any other office bearer. A five-member bench headed by Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani sought whether the president officially consulted leader of opposition in the National Assembly over appointment of NAB chairman after the prime minister requested him for appointment of a new head of the Bureau.

According to Akram Sheikh, counsel for Chaudhry Nisar (former leader of opposition in the National Assembly), then prime minister did not forward any list of proposed candidates for the post of NAB chairman.

“[Fasih Bukhari was appointed as chairman NAB] without purposeful, meaningful and consensus-oriented consultations with the opposition leader,” Sheikh argued.

On the other hand, Sardar Abdul Latif Khosa, counsel for NAB chairman Fasih Bukhari, accused PML-N for creating misunderstandings and wasting the time of court only to accomplish its mission of maligning President Asif Ali Zardari.

“Being politically motivated Chaudhry Nisar wanted to have NAB chairman of his own choice. As in the past when a sitting senator of the PML-N being head of the bureau had played havoc and coerced convictions in trial nullified by the Supreme Court, resulting in the removal of the then chief justice of Lahore High Court with another senior judge of LHC and a sitting judge of the apex court,” he remarked.
