Schools announce holidays after the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading reached the hazardous level in Malaysia. The air pollution level is categorized as hazardous when the reading is 301 or more; very unhealthy at 201 to 300; unhealthy at 101 to 200; moderate at 51 to 100 and good at zero to 50.

Education Ministry director-general Tan Sri Abd Ghafar Mahmud made the announcement on Thursday. He said the National Haze Action Plan constitutionally allows the Education Ministry to close schools in areas affected by the haze.

“The school authorities have to constantly monitor the haze situation by checking the API reading available on the Department of Environment website. If the API reading is more than 250, the school authorities have to stop all co-curricular and outdoor activities. The school authorities also have to cease all outdoor activities involving high-risk students who may be affected by the haze once the API reading is higher than 150,” said Abd Ghafar.

Students are encouraged to take necessary health precautions and wear nasal mask. Excessive water intake is also considered useful.

“The school authorities have to send students who have fallen ill to the clinic or hospital nearby. Parents who are concerned about the health of their children are given permission to take their children out of the school as long as the school is informed,” added Abd Ghafar.

At least 211 schools have been called off in Muar, Johor. According to the Department of Environment (DoE), Muar is so far the worst affected district by the haze as the API reading in this area raised to 383 on Thursday.
