Supreme Court has squashed the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) notification for holding common entrance tests – NEET – for MBBS, BDS and post-graduate medical courses. The apex court heard 115 petitions against the MCI notification on NEET.

The three-judge bench explained that the admissions which have already taken place will be exempted from apex court’s decision. Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir and Justice Vikramajit Sen maintained that MCI does not have the authority to prescribe all India medical entrance tests. Reportedly, the MCI notification violated Articles 19, 25, 26, 29 and 30 of the Constitution. On the contrary, Justice A R Dave opposed the decision of Chief Justice Kabir and Justice Sen.

“Holding of National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) is legal, practical and is the need of the society. Hence, I have dissented,” Justice Dave said.

The increasingly controversial matter of NEET has now been resolved. With the final verdict of the apex court, students will be able to concentrate on preparations for the EAMCET, entrance exam conducted by the State for professional courses.

“The clarity has reduced pressure on students who were worried over competing at the national level,” said P. Madhusudhan Reddy, president of Government Junior Lecturers Association (GJLA).

K. Chandra Mohan, former president of Students’ Federation of India (SFI), who aggressively protested against the NEET, celebrated the apex court’s verdict as he believes it will uplift undue pressure from rural students.
