Renowned Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has not only been set free but also exempted from personal appearance during future trials with reference to a hit-and-run case. A session court in Mumbai has charged the actor in connection to a roadside accident.

According to the court, Khan will be tried under IPC section 304, culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Khan personally appeared in the court on Wednesday and sought an exemption from further personal appearances. The court deferred the case till Aug 19.

The maximum punishment for Khan, if proven guilty, would be 10 years of jail time. The court has denied Khan’s appeal against a magistrate’s order for his retrial in the 2002 hit-and-run case. Earlier, Khan was tried by a magistrate under lesser charge of causing death by negligence (Section 304A of IPC). Lawyer Ashok Mundargi has maintained that the magistrate’s order was erroneous, bad in law and contrary to evidence on record.

On the other hand, the actor has also launched a special website for the sole purpose of informing media and general public about the cases filed against him. The website reads, “Certain court cases are filed against me. There is widespread media reporting of these cases. The reports are sometimes inaccurate and misleading, and cause damage to my reputation, both personal and professional. I have been advised to put up this website to provide easy accessible information about the ongoing status of these cases.”
