The lawmakers in the provincial assemblies, National Assembly and the Senate will elect the new president of Pakistan today. The top two contenders for the position are the ruling party’s Mamnoon Hussain and PTI’s Wajihuddin Ahmad. The former ruling party, Pakistan People’s Party has refused to participate in the elections due to the untimely change in the schedule of polls.

Pakistan Muslim League-N has a visible majority in the National Assembly, Punjab’s provincial assembly and in the Senate. With the opposition party in Sindh, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) pledging to support PML-N’s Mamnoon Hussain, the presidential election becomes highly predictable.

“The election is more or less a settled issue. There is no excitement in it because it has become a one-sided affair, and the powers of the president are very limited and nominal,” writes political analyst Hasan Askari Rizvi.

Hussain is in line to replace PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari as the president of Pakistan after the polls today. Hussain is a renowned businessman who has been loyal to PML-N for decades. He briefly served as the governor of Sindh in 1999. Although Hussain owns a flawless profile, he is believed to have little say in the political decisions of the country.

Premier Nawaz Sharif is known to enjoy his freedom and power. He has named Hussain as the presidential candidate only because he strongly believes that Hussain will give him room to operate. If the new president is from PML-N, the election will only boost the confidence of PM Nawaz Sharif.

“Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif likes to bring in political nonentities so he is the center of power and in the limelight. So I don’t think this new president will be attracting much attention or creating much excitement,” adds Rizvi.
