The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has admitted taking orders from the ruling political party, Umno, by directing DAP to hold re-elections. DAP’s national publicity secretary Tony Pua told the press on Thursday that RoS failed to explain the process behind its directions. Pua accused Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for influencing the RoS’s decisions.

Meanwhile, DAP announced holding a re-election of its central executive committee (CEC). The controversial political party is accused of vote-rigging in December elections. RoS director-general Datuk Abdul Rahman Othman alleged that DAP has failed to comply with the law and it must re-elect its central executive committee.

“Instead, the RoS has besmirched the party with unfounded allegations that we have not been cooperative with them. The DAP has to-date made every attempt to obtain a reasonable explanation from them on their decision. But the RoS has continued to deny DAP our rights under the law by providing a full and reasonable explanation on its orders for the party to carry out fresh CEC elections,” Pau said.

Pau also claimed that his party’s secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has sent multiple meeting requests to the RoS but all its efforts were in vain. He accused the RoS officials of being unprofessional.

“It has stubbornly refused to show us under which law they are able to take such actions. The only clue given by the RoS in their correspondence is that ‘some members were not satisfied’ with the previous election,” he added.
