The dialogue process between the government of Pakistan and outlawed militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has finally been initiated. Sources in the government and the leadership of TTP allegedly confirmed the news on Saturday.

The dialogue was expected to begin a few months ago; however, the death of a TTP leader Maulvi Waliur Rehman in a drone attack froze all the efforts previously made to bring both sides to discuss a solution. The government of Pakistan remained adamant and has finally succeeded to put the dialogue process back on track.

According to TTP, the initial talks revolve around issues like sectarian attacks and association with outfits such as Al-Qaeda and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. The initiation of a dialogue process might imply that the government has been successful in convincing the Taliban to put a stop to terror activities. The last major terrorist attack in Pakistan was on the Quetta Police Lines.

In the meanwhile, the government is forming a national anti-terrorism policy with the consent of almost all the active political parties in Pakistan. The policy is likely to be announced in a few weeks. Apparently, the political leadership and Pakistan Army seem to be working on the same lines. Both PM Sharif and COAS Kiyani are said to give priority to having a dialogue with TTP.

“I want end to game of blood and fire as soon as possible. No matter this end is achieved on negotiating table through reconciliation or use of full state force. All the institutions of the country are united on this national cause without any split or division,” PM Sharif said.
