The politicians in Pakistan seem to have unanimously agreed on giving priority to negotiations over never-ending war. Civil and military leadership are fortunately claiming to be on the same page. The decision was taken during the All Parties Conference held in Islamabad on Monday.

The negotiations will focus on drafting a structure that will ensure peace in the region and at least convince the Pakistani wing of Tehreek-e-Taliban to put down their weapons. In case the peace talks fail, Pakistan is fully prepared and equipped to tackle the problem by the use of force.

Chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the APC meeting lasted for six hours. The government took this opportunity to brief all the participants about country’s national security strategy and in return noted their feedback and concerns. Military leadership was also invited to attend the meeting.

Although the military is prepared to ensure smooth peace-talks with the outlawed groups, the institution has warned about certain elements within the TTP that might never want to reconcile. ISI Director-General Lt General Zaheerul Islam also confirmed that there were differences within the TTP on the issue of conducting peace talks with the government. The military and civil leadership have discussed the matter in detail and are taking decisions with mutual understanding.

PM Nawaz urged all the politicians to take the matter of nation security seriously and do not use it to mend their political careers. He said it is important for the sovereignty of Pakistan that all political parties resolve the issue in a highly democratic manner.
