Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to delay the announcement of new Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) till the retirement of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on November 29th. The government’s indecisiveness was discussed and criticized by several political parties after General Khalid Shameem Wynne retired as the CJCSC on Monday.

General Khalid has served the military for up to 42 years. The government seems hesitant to announce the replacement of a veteran; hence, General Kayani will provisionally take charge of both highly sensitive positions. If the government had announced the name of new CJCSC on Monday, it would have given a direct hint of who would become the next COAS in Pakistan.

The state government, time and again, reiterates that all its decisions will purely be in accordance with the constitution and the new appointments will be based on the principal of seniority. One of the potential successors to the incumbent COAS is Lt. General Haroon Aslam, in which case the new CJCSC from the Army would be Lt. Gen Rashid.

Eliminating all the possible controversies which always find their way to sensitive army appointments, General Kayani announced his decision to retire after two terms instead of seeking an extension. His decision has been widely accepted and appreciated. However, few sources claim that this might have surprised the government.

“The government has been foxed by the sudden announcement by General Kayani who loves surprising others,” remarked Major-General (retired) Athar Abbas, former military spokesperson and ex- director general Inter Services Public Relations.
