White House has made a great attempt to smooth the recently brewing troubles between the United States and India. This Friday, Susan Rice, Presidents National Security Adviser, said that the two countries should not focus on the dispute over an Indian diplomat. ‘Derail the future we are working diligently to build,” said Rice. The diplomat, Devyani Khobragade, was arrested on December 12, 2013 on charges of lying to US authorities on how much she paid her maid and also on visa fraud. She was forced about stripped-search while being detained in Manhattans federal court house, an incident that led to a major rift between the Indian and the United States authorities.

The controversy interrupted on what had been a friendly US-Indian relations visit as part of a US pivot toward Asia. Susan Rice, addressing the Aspen Institute US-India Dialogue, said that media has paid more attention to the rifts and disagreements than drawing attention to the efforts being made to make relations better. ‘Those difficulties should be minor compared to the breadth of our relationship and the magnitude of what we can accomplish together. We must also deal with our differences in a constructive manner, commensurate with a relationship of this importance,’ said RIce.

She further added that ‘We cannot allow such challenges to derail the future we are working diligently to build — a future of greater prosperity, greater security, and consistent adherence to our shared values,’ Rice said. Rice said that the elections being held in India would not change anything and the ties between the two countries will continue to grow strong.
