The DAP Seputeh MP Teresa Kok will be charged for her controversial Chinese New Year video named the “Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014”, who is the latest opposition leader to be blamed with the charges despite the Najib administration’s pledge to revoke the contentious law of the parliament.

This 11-minute video caused a stir amongst the government supporters who saw Kok’s video as a way to make fun of Malaysia and its leaders, covering the mockery in the story behind the violent threats on her. Kok’s aide Alice Lan informed that the Seputeh MP will be charged at the Duta High Court at 9.30am this Wednesday. The DAP leader was alleged to have uploaded the video clip titled ‘Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014 Video Clip’ on YouTube on the 27th of January. The video had poked fun on a variety of issues such as the education system and the Sulu terrorist intrusion in Lahad Datu, Sabah last year.

Though Kok could not be reached for comments, her lawyer, Sankara Nair, informed that he has been told to produce Kok at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court tomorrow. “I have been told by the police to produce her in court tomorrow morning to be charged under the Sedition Act,” he said. Sankara further added that Kok is being charged under the Section 4 (1)(c) of the Sedition Act which relates to “publishing, selling, or offering to sell seditious material”. Nair also added his opinion, “My opinion is that it (Onederful Malaysia) is a benign political satire that is not seditious, and does not contain any seditious tendencies; as a lawyer, I think it’s cruel to charge her with this.”
