The district authorities of Varanasi this Wednesday denied permission to the prime ministerial candidate of the Bharta Janata Party (BJP) to carry out one of his rallies tomorrow. This made the BJP go into sudden action and work on formulating an alternate plan. The permission for the second rally was denied by declaring that the ground where Modi wanted to address the public was already booked.

Blaming the district administration, the BJP leader Arun Jaitley said, “I don’t know who is interfering but the returning officer of this constituency is a threat to free and fair election. This is unprecedented and unheard of and the party will not take it lying down”. The BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said the Varanasi administration was obeying an “unwritten order” and there is an “undeclared understanding” between them and the ruling Samajwadi Party.

Whereas on the other hand, Arvind Kejriwal, of the Aam Aadmi Party, is leading the Lok Sabha Polls in Varanasi. The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has joined hands with Kejriwal and promised to support him in the elections. Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umri, national president of this organization, said, “We have taken this decision after due deliberation. We consider it imperative that for thwarting the designs of divisive forces, all secular forces should rally around Kejriwal in Varanasi.” Other political parties have also planned to extend their support to Kejriwal in Varanasi, further promoting the anti-Modi campaign. Political parties extending support include the Janata Dal (U) and the Communist Party of India (CPI).
