The former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Janardhan Reddy, 80, died this early morning following a prolonged illness. Reddy had been undergoing a treatment for neurology-related problems. He died at 5 AM. His family consists of a wife and four sons. Reddy, a sitting Rajya Sabha member from Andhra Pradesh, served as chief minister previously from December, 1990 to October, 1992. He served as a state minister and legislator in his long political career spanning several decades.

The BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu condoled the former CM’s demise and said he was a popular leader of the state. “His demise is a loss to the people of Andhra Pradesh, particularly the people of Nellore district,” he said while conveying his heartfelt condolences to his wife and sons. Venkaiah also described Reddy as hardworking and innovative and said he brought many people into his party, encouraged them and gave them recognition at various levels. Despite being political adversaries, Venkaiah said he and Reddy shared a good relationship.

The Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah also condoled the death of the brave politician. “He was an able administrator, an elderly statesman and a renowned Parliamentarian who had served for the cause of the development of poor and downtrodden”, Rosaiah said in a Raj Bhavan release. “Andhra Pradesh has lost a bold and dynamic leader who stood for his principles. His death is an irreparable loss to the nation and to Andhra Pradesh in particular”, he said.
