The police have arrested a former civil servant for extorting his wife of RM8,000 after claiming that he was kidnapped two weeks ago. Several months after being laid off from job, the husband used his imagination to fake a kidnap and extract money from his wife.
Kota Kinabalu Police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun said that the man is in his early 30s and was arrested red handed while trying to withdraw money from an automated teller machine (ATM) at 3.00pm on 16th of May this last Friday. “On May 15, the man’s 22 year old wife received several photographs of him and was told to deposit money into a bank account to ensure his release. An investigation found that the man made up the story that he was kidnapped by a group of men on May 7,” he informed a press conference this Wednesday.
Jauteh said police also seized nine SIM cards, including the one used to contact his wife asking for the ‘ransom.” The 22 year old wife, though concerned about her husband’s safety still lodged a police report. “Police immediately deployed a surveillance team to ambush the alleged kidnappers in a bank here in the state capital. Several hours after the money was deposited, police saw the husband walking into the bank to withdraw the ransom money. He was immediately arrested and taken to the police station for questioning,” said Jauteh.
