An anti-corruption court in Karachi this Thursday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani in a case related to financial irregularities in the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) which is responsible for the exports of the country.

Apart from Gilani, Makhdoom Amin Faheem belonging to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was also given a non-bailable arrest warrant according to a local news channel. Both the PPP leaders were given three notices to the leaders to appear before the court but after these notices were ignored, they were issued bailable arrest warrants. After these attempts went futile, the Federal Anti-Corruption Court finally issued non-bailable arrest warrants. The court then adjourned the hearing to the 17th of June. Three others accused in the case have also been absent and are believed to have gone abroad.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had registered the case against Faheem during his tenure as the commerce minister. Gilani and Faheem had been accused of involvement in a seven-billion-rupee ($70.9 million) financial scam in the TDAP. Muhammad Firdous, the key accused, had turned approver against the former prime minister and former federal minister.
