The Gujarat government this Thursday finally received the permission to raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar dam by a height of approximately 17 metres. This decision drew immense criticism from Narmada Bachao Andolan which declared that many densely populated areas in the Madhya Pradesh were at risk of submergence.

The Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel proudly announced that the Narmada Control Authority has cleared after a long wait of eight years that the dam’s height can be raised to 138 metres from the current 121 metres. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also appealed for the clearance, which the local government believes will pave way for resolving its pressing water issues. “Heartfelt gratitude from the people of Gujarat to Hon PM Narendra Modi. The decision pending has come so swiftly. Achchhe din aa Gaye hain!!,” Patel wrote on twitter. “At Junagadh right now for Shala Preveshotsav. Leaving for Narmada dam site at Kevadia. Not a single day should be lost in resuming work,” she further tweeted.

Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar, who has been leading the opposition to the project for years now, that the “new government has not given us any hearing nor has it taken any time nor made any attempt to know the ground reality”. “Densely populated villages in Nimad area of Madhya Pradesh, with houses, farms, shops, temples, mosques and standing crops will face a watery grave if the dam’s height is increased,” she said in a statement.
