The Goa Governor in India, Bharat Vir Wanchoo, resigned this Friday and stepped down from his office. This happened hours after he was thoroughly questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today in relation to the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper procurement scam. Wanchoo still had three years left in completing his post as the governor of Goa.

Wanchoo is the fifth governor in the list of governors who have resigned from the office after the Bharatiya Janata Party came into power this year. The CBI quizzed the former governor early in the morning at the Raj Bhavan located near Panaji. The questioning of Wanchoo was done the same way that the CBI had questioned the national security advisor and former West Bengal governor MK Narayanan. Wanchoo, a former Indian Police Service officer, was the head of the elite Special Protection Group. According to the CBI, both he and Narayanan were part of meetings which led to the height ceiling of the VVIP choppers to be reduced, enabling AgustaWestland, an Italian chopper company, to enter the bidding picture. Earlier this year India had cancelled the 3600 crore rupees deal with AgustaWestland for the supply of 12 AW101 helicopters.

The BJP has been probing into many matters related which are related to several senior party leaders. The BJP state vice president Wilfred Mesquita, has been informed to repeatedly been asking Wanchoo to resign “for his own good”.
