The Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam wrote to Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, Governor-General of Australia Sir Peter Cosgrove, and to King Willem-Alexander, the King of the Netherlands to express his condolences over the new mishap with the Malaysian Airlines.

The Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 flew this Thursday from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when a surface to air missile brought down the plane causing all the 298 people aboard the plane to die. The US Ambassador Samantha Power told the UN Security Council in New York this Friday that the missile was likely fired from a rebel-held area near the Russian border. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has also written to his Malaysian counterpart Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte to convey his condolences over the crash.

In the letter to Tuanku Abdul Halim , the President said that he grieves for the families who lost their loved ones. “I grieve with the families who have lost their loved ones so suddenly. My thoughts are with them, and I wish them the strength and resolve to carry on through this time of sorrow. I join the people of Singapore in extending our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences,” wrote Tan.
