This Tuesday, the court directed the Attorney General Salman Butt to assure the apex court that the Chief Election Commissioner will be appointed by the 5th of December. Butt failed to convince the court in writing that the post will be filled by the date and instead requested the court to postpone the case hearing to Dec 5th.

The court rejected the request and warned that it will have to take an action against the Prime Minister and the opposition leader if they fail to appoint a new CEC by the 5th of December. The three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk, added that its previous decision to withdraw Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali of the apex court on Dec 5 from the post of CEC would remain if the government and the opposition did not honour the court’s deadline, according to Dawn News.

Dawn News further informed that the hearing of the case was subsequently adjourned to Dec 8. The post of the Chief Election Commissioner was held by Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim but has been vacant for 16 months after his retirement. The government and the opposition are still facing difficulties on appointing a suitable candidate for the post because of the constitutional bar that the post should be filled by a retired judge from the superior judiciary.
