pak welcomes ban ki moon’s offer to mediate with india on kashmir issueThe Foreign Office of Pakistan welcomed the offer by the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, to mediate between Pakistan and India on Thursday over the heightening tensions between the neighbors due to the Kashmir Issue. The two countries are in a diplomatic pitfall after the killing of a Kashmiri militant in India-held Kashmir (IHK) sparked protests in the region.

A statement issued by the Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria explained that the UN should play its role in order to get UN resolutions implemented. He mentioned that “it is the UN’s responsibility to intervene in the matter and get the issue resolved” adding that “India cannot call the present situation of IHK an internal matter.” Moreover, Zakaria stressed that “Jammu and Kashmir is not an internal matter of India, it’s a recognised issue under the United Nations.” So far the death toll from clashes between Indian troops and protesters in the region has risen to 34 amid growing protests despite imposition of an indefinite curfew in most parts of IHK after militant commander Burhan Wani was killed.

Earlier on Sunday, Pakistan condemned the ‘extra-judicial’ killing of Hizbul Mujahideen’s chief of operations, Burhan Wani, by Indian government forces. According to the FO, Pakistan also expressed its concerns over the detention of Kashmiri leadership in IHK and called upon the Indian government to fulfill its human rights obligations as well as its commitments under UN resolutions.
