Tony Abbott is adamant that there would not be any new statutory individual contracts. Facing the derision of Peter Costello, Abbott is supported by his workplace relations spokesman, Eric Abetz, who says his personal analysis on labour market deregulation has also changed over time.

Senator alleged he understands Mr. Costello’s regret that Labor’s Fair Work Act had taken to pieces some of the Howard government’s workplace reforms, but the Coalition aimed to steer clear of an ideological response to that reality. He says he had “never been doctrinaire” and new statutory individual contracts were out.

Abetz said: “I made it absolutely crystal clear that there were certain policies that were part of the past and were never going to be part of our future.”

On the other hand, Peter Costello suggests Mr. Abbott to leave his options open on industrial reform, and abide by his party’s ‘free enterprise’ principles. While Troy Whitford says Mr. Costello’s neo-liberalism is not aligned with the national interest.

Troy Whitford said: “Costello clearly wants a return to his own golden age. Unable to accept that the Australian people grew increasingly resentful toward neo-liberal policies and subsequently voted with their feet, Costello is now trying to encourage Tony Abbott into another WorkChoices policy.”
