iiNet landmark has won a case in Australian High Court on Friday against all television and film networks claiming rights over illegal downloading of films, movies, dramas, and music via the BitTorrent technology.

iiNet won against 34 Australian and international companies which have their branches in Australia. These include big shots like Warner Bros, Village Roadshow, Disney, Song Pictures, Seven Network, and Universal Pictures. The court announced that it is not directly in the control of iiNet to restrict their users from using BitTorrent and share files without paying for them. The decision of the court has not only given relief to iiNet but several other internet service providers including telecommunication industry which now feels relaxed to be not facing potential charges against infringement copyright by their users.

The Australian and United States companies explained that their intention behind the case was to ensure that internet service providers take some steps to ensure that their clients do not download the pirated version of music and movies.

The hearing which took place on Friday regarding the copyrights case had the entire panel of judges voting for iiNet and claiming that Australia’s third largest internet service provider has no control over allowing or restricting the use of BitTorrent by their customers. The summary of the statement announced said, “Rather, the extent of iiNet’s power to prevent its customers from infringing the appellants’ copyright was limited to an indirect power to terminate its contractual relationship with its customers.”
