A sexual harassment case against Federal Parliamentary Speaker Peter Slipper was filed by James Ashby in the Federal Court. It was heard in the court that James Ashby, who was a former media adviser to the Slipper, provided information to his political rivals and to a scandalous reporter in order to undermine his boss.
It has been told in the court that Ashby’s cellular phone records proved that he and a colleague worked jointly to undermine their boss.
Julian Burnside, counsel for the Commonwealth said in the court that Ashby’s case had been “brought to damage Mr. Slipper and help his political opponents”.
Ashby said in the sworn statement when filing his lawsuit he said: “I’m not motivated by any political considerations or any financial considerations; my motive was to ensure conduct toward me stopped.”
Slipper’s spokesperson, David Chin reported today that Ashby’s claim for sexual harassment was aimed to damage the reputation of Slipper and also for the political advantage of his political opponent in the Liberal-National party namely former Howard government minister Mal Brough.
Justice Rares ordered Slipper to file and provide his defence before 8 June which Slipper had failed to meet this deadline. Rares will announce his response and a further hearing on Friday.
