Gusti Ngurah Wiratna, the governor of Kerobokan jail confirmed on Monday that the 35-year-old had been suggested for the sentence cut as part of Indonesian Independence Day celebrations on August 17. The drug smuggler Schapelle Corby was set to have another six months shaved from her sentence.

Corby had her 20-year sentence slashed by five years in May after she appealed for clemency from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who was caught in 2004 attempting to import 4.1 kilograms of marijuana into Bali in her body board bag. If approved by the Justice and Human Rights Ministry in Jakarta, the latest cut would bring her official discharge date forward to March 2017.

On the other hand, the former beautician from the Gold Coast could walk free from Kerobokan midway through 2015 if she was granted further maximum remissions of eight months a year, or even sooner if granted parole. Parole was very exceptional for foreigners in Indonesia, and Corby would have to satisfy strict conditions for this success.

The multifaceted application process included the Australian government providing an assurance that she would not breach the conditions. The only female member of the Bali Nine, Renae Lawrence has also been recommended for a sentence cut of six months. Lawrence, from Newcastle, New South Wales, was serving 20 years for her role in a failed 2005 plot to smuggle more than eight kilograms of heroin from Bali to Australia. She has already been granted more than two years in cutback.
