Fire on Adelaide Hills is quickly spreading as it reportedly engulfed a house on Friday. The risk to properties and lives has also significantly heightened. According to the Country Fire Service, the fire also destroyed a shed and has burnt down everything on 250 hectares of land. People have fled from their properties at Cherryville, Marble Hill and Basket Range to seek refuge.
Authorities report that the destroyed house in Blockers Road at Basket Range was been protected by three resident who later surrendered as they watched the house burn down. The alleged source of fire is a private burn-off that flared out of control in unseasonably warm weather on Thursday afternoon. Hundreds of firefighters and aerial bombers are constantly struggling to take the situation under control.
“The fire was burning up slopes and up some of the valleys. We’re waiting for the fire to come out to an area where we can actually have some tactical advantage to suppress the fire,” CFS chief officer Greg Nettleton said.
Police has restricted traffic in the area for emergency purposes and emergency service personnel have been deployed to cater any unforeseen mishap. CFS officials say the staff might take another day or two to contain the fire.
“We’ve got another two to three days here. We’re trying to put in a back burn on Big Range Road, which is the most northern section of the fire. To do that we are trying to punch a `dozer line through scrub at the moment and then when weather conditions are favorable put in a back burn,” CFS coordinator Mark Thomason said.
