The Labor has presented a plan to direct all the asylum seekers to Nauru. PM Kevin Rudd announced a new agreement on Saturday that would allow Australia to leave asylum seekers on the Pacific island nation. PM Rudd also promised $29.9 million in aid.

Nauru President Baron Waqa and PM Kevin Rudd met in Brisbane to finalize the plan. According to Rudd, the new agreement is very similar to that signed recently with Papua New Guinea which involved redirecting asylum seekers to PNG.

“Under the arrangement, it will now be possible for asylum seekers to not only be processed in Nauru, if they are found to be in need of protection they could also be settled there. In the first instance, the government will focus on transferees in family groups and unaccompanied minors for settlement,” said PM Rudd.

The premier added that his government is reaching out to more countries with similar agreements so that asylum seekers can be offered settlement in more than one country. PM Rudd said Nauru is a small country and it has all the right to only offer asylum to a limited number of people.

“The significance of today’s announcement is not the numbers that are involved, but that we are adding an extra layer to a comprehensive regional approach and we thank the government of Nauru for that. This is just one extra pillar,” he added.
