For the first time since 2006, British Prime Minister David Cameron will travel to Russia to mend the diplomatic dialogue that has been suspended between both the countries. He will be travelling to Moscow on Sunday to hold talks with President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Tony Blair was the first Prime Minister to initiate talks with Moscow and Cameron will be the second one.
The Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has not met any British Prime Minister or official since the past four years. He is thus, the focal point of David Cameron’s visit.
Russia’s ambassador to London,Alexander Yakovenko is reported to have said that “The most important thing about this summit is to relaunch political dialogue between our governments. Our leaders need to be able to call each other, discuss urgent matters, say directly to each other where the other is wrong. At the moment, we do not have this political dialogue.”
Strained relations between the countries have remained since 2006 due to the murder in London of former KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko and visa complexities. However, the objective of these talks is to establish trade and economic ties between the countries along with global economic issues and eurozone crises.
Russia’s human rights issue is expected to not be discussed in the meeting.
