The Speaker of Britain’s House of Commons, John Bercow, made a bold statement on Monday when he stressed that U.S. President Donald Trump should not be allowed to address both houses of the Parliament during his state visit later this year. Even though the dates for the official visit of Mr. Trump are not confirmed, an official invitation was extended earlier this year. Customarily, the official visitors address the Parliament but Bercow seems to have a different opinion.

Addressing the House of Commons on Monday, Bercow mentioned that “our opposition to racism and to sexism and our support for equality before the law and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons.” He explained that “before the imposition of the migrant ban, I would myself have been strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall. After the imposition of the migrant ban by President Trump, I am even more strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall.” Moreover, Bercow pointed out that “an address by a foreign leader to both houses of parliament is not an automatic right; it is an earned honor.”

This strong statement coming from a man who occupies a key role in the British legislature, i.e. Speaker of the House, holds a lot value even though his status demands impartially. However, Prime Minister Theresa May has so far remained insistent that the U.K.-U.S. partnership is still strong and the official visit will take place.
