According to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), U.K. unemployment has risen by 28,000 for the three months since November leaving the total for the number of Britons out of work at 2.67 million, making the unemployment rate 8.4%.

The unemployment among youth and female has increased as the U.K. jobless rate hits a near 17-year high. The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance has also increased for the 12th month in a row, up by 7,200 in February to 1.6 million which is the worst figure since the end of 2009.

However, there are still the positive signs which show there is an increase in the number of people employed with the figure rising by 9,000 to 28.12 million over the last quarter.

Related figures from the ONS reveal that public sector employment fell by 37,000 in the final quarter of 2011 to just under six million, while the number of people employed in private firms increased by 45,000 to 23 million.

The official labour market figures indicate the smallest quarterly unemployment increase since May 2011, but many economists do expect the total jobless people to reach 3 million by 2012 end. Youth unemployment has increased by 16,000 to approach 1.04 million, a jobless rate of 22.5 percent, while the number of unemployed women jumped to 1.13 million by an increase of 22,000.

The unemployment rate is now 8.4 per cent, up by 0.1 percent from the previous quarter – recorded as the highest since 1995’s end.
