Pilot becomes critical after Ashwell light aircraft crash

A pilot suffering from “life-threatening” injuries has been airlifted to hospital after his plane crash landed on Friday night.

The aircraft came down in a field near Newnham Way of Ashwell, in Hertfordshire. According to the East of England Ambulance Service, as a result of plane crash, one man was critically injured and given emergency treatment at the scene. He was then flown by air ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge to a specialist trauma centre shortly after the crash that happened at 6:23pm.

Emergency services including the East Anglian Air Ambulance, two land ambulances from Letchworth GC and fire crews from Baldock and Royston, were called to the scene.

East of England Ambulance Service spokesman, Gary Sanderson has told: “A man received life threatening injuries and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilisation by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for further care.”

Ashwell resident, Ellen Wainwright-Lee said: “I’m amazed we didn’t hear it. I saw fire engines and ambulances, and the police closed the road. We were right next door and we didn’t see it.”

The fire service has told that the man was not trapped in the aircraft and its fuel tanks did not present a hazard.

The pilot was flying a Mini-Max plane, made of wood that can fly at up to 80mph. The crashed plane will be removed from the field later today.

The police confirmed that the Air Accident Investigation Branch has been informed.
