First Minister, Alex SalmondThe Scottish Parliament is all set to formally back independence for the first time in its history.

First Minister, Alex Salmond will lead a debate Scotland’s future, calling on Parliament to agree that Scotland should become independent.

With 67 SNP MSPs, two Greens and independent MSPs, Margo MacDonald and Bill Walker favouring the independence, the nationalists own sufficient lead to defeat a Labour amendment that aimed to promote Scotland’s continuing place in the U.K., which has the backing of the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

While, the referendum is regarded largely as a procedural part that will have symbolic significance for the SNP as it will allow them to state that Scottish independence is “the will of the Scottish Parliament”.

Mr. Salmond said: “It is the responsibility of this generation to hand over a better country to the next generation than the one inherited. It is vital for the people of Scotland to take full responsibility for the decisions about the future of Scotland.”

The declaration had been able to receive over 10,000 signatures by the end of last weekend.

However, opponents including Labour leader, Johann Lamont promoting her claim that the United Kingdom is “stronger together and weaker apart”.

She has stated: “Scotland has achieved a great deal as part of the United Kingdom and that we can achieve so much more. By remaining in a devolved United Kingdom our children will inherit a more prosperous, confident Scotland.”
