The Spiritual Buddhist Leader, The Dalai LamaThe Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama has today dismissed a reported Chinese threat to withdraw their Olympic athletes from a training camp in response to a planned speech as “almost routine”.

The Dalai Lama has made his comment as his eight-day’s U.K. visit gets launched during which he will pass on a message of non-violence, dialogue and universal responsibility.

It has been reported earlier this week that Chinese officials asked Leeds City Council to pressure organisers to cancel his visit today to the Yorkshire Business Convention. The council stepped away from the convention in Leeds but said it was aware of “sensitivities” the event involves.

During the last August, Leeds has been selected by the Chinese Olympic officials as the country’s training base. Around 300 athletes, coaches and support staff representing China in at least 11 sports are due to be staying there from early July.

China places Tibet’s spiritual leader as an enemy of the state and threatened to withdraw its Olympic athletes from their training camp in Leeds because of his current visit to the city on Friday. But the Buddhist leader has stated before the media in Manchester city centre: “That always happens. It’s almost like a routine.” He has further added that in case, the comments by the Chinese state had inconvenienced anyone, “then I feel sorry”.

The Dalai Lama will address thousands of young people at an event in Manchester regarding the need to foster peace and dialogue on Saturday. On Friday, the Dalai Lama will attend an international business convention in Leeds to talk about ethics in commerce.

The comedian Russell Brand, who has previously battled drug addiction, will be compering the event, entitled “Stand Up and Be The Change”.

Dalai Lama has expressed his happiness to be in England and spoke of his “close relations” with the country. The trip comes just a month after his visit to London to collect the £1.1 million ($1.7 million, 1.4 million euro) Templeton Prize, which he told to give in a charity donation. During that visit the Nobel Peace Laureate met British Prime Minister David Cameron, inviting anger from China, whose top legislator Wu Bangguo cancelled his Britain visit in protest.

The Tibetan leader, who fled his homeland for India in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, has declared last year about giving up his political role to focus on spiritual duties. Despite his calls for autonomy rather than independence for Tibet, Beijing has kept on accusing him of trying to split Tibet from the rest of China and has pressurised the world leaders not to meet him.
