The comedian, variety performer, and veteran singer, Max Bygraves has dies in his sleep at his daughter’s home in Hope Island, Queensland, on Friday. He was 89 had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born in Rotherhithe, south-east London, in 1922 as Walter William Bygraves. The former Family Fortunes presenter gained the nickname Max from his impersonations of comedian Max Miller while serving in the RAF.
He emigrated from Bournemouth, Dorset, to Australia in 2005. His showbusiness career began in variety during the Second World War and – with his catchphrase “I wanna tell you a story” – get a widespread fame. He had been best known for his Singalongamax series of LPs, a cavalcade of yesterday’s hits which Bygraves chose with his mother’s music tastes in mind.
Bygraves made his first of many Royal Variety Show appearances in 1950 and also appeared at the London Palladium, then the world’s premier variety theatre, 14 times in 10 years alongside stars such as Judy Garland.
Mr. Bygraves’ agent Johnny Mans has said: “We have lost one of the best entertainers that Britain has ever produced. His death is a great loss to the entertainment profession and a great loss to all of his friends in the industry. He was a friend to everyone and there was no ‘airs and graces’ about him, he was just a superstar, but didn’t realise he was a superstar.”
