Pope Benedict XVIPope Benedict XVI has announced to resign at the end of February due to having lack of strength to fulfill his office duties, becoming the first chief pontiff since the 15th century to take such a step.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is of the view of being too old to continue at the age of 85. And According to a statement from the Vatican, he has said to have noticed his deteriorated strength over recent months “to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me”.

“For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter.”

He became Pope in 2005 following the death of John Paul II.

The news has shocked everyone because of an unexpected development of the first papal resignation in nearly 600 years. The announcement has surprised governments, Vatican-watchers and even his closest aides.

Traditionally, popes usually do not step down from papacy, but the current Pope has initiated a new trend, which has been marked by pontiffs dying while in office.

Former editor of the Catholic Herald, Damian Thompson has said that the Pope had made “a brave move” by making a decision to leave his post.

The Anglican Archbishop of York, Dr. John Sentamu has paid tribute to the pope, saying the Christian world would miss such a “great theologian”.
