U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron has asked Argentina to respect the wishes of Falkland islanders to remain British after a historic referendum delivered the result that clearly favors U.K.

Mr. Cameron has said that Argentina must carefully notice the result and repeated his words that Britain will “always be there to defend” the Falkland Islanders.

Mr. Cameron has told: “The Falkland islanders could not have spoken more clearly. They want to remain British and that view should be respected by everybody, including Argentina.”

Argentine forces invaded the islands in 1982 and the U.K. has promised to defend the islands in the south Atlantic Ocean. The referendum follows an overgrowing pressure from Argentina over its claims to the islands 31 years after the Falklands war.

According to the official figures, around 92 percent of the islands’ 1,672 eligible voters turned out to deliver a 99.8 percent “yes” vote in favor of staying into the British territory.

Of the 1,517 valid votes of referendum, just 3 voters casted vote as “no” to the question that stated: “Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?”

However, Argentine ambassador to London, Alicia Castro has clearly dismissed the vote by calling it a “silly game” and a “PR exercise”.

U.K. Foreign Office Minister, Hugo Swire has said after the referendum result’s announcement that the Argentine government should stop “bullying and intimidating” the Falkland Islands after residents voted to remain a part of British overseas territory.

Mr. Swire has told that the result is clearly indicative to the kind of future the islanders wanted, adding that Argentina must take the final result in a “mature way” and think of collaborating well after the poll.
