DUP to reject Brexit deal

On Monday, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the leader of the DUP, announced that the party’s eight MPs would vote against Rishi Sunak’s new Brexit deal for Northern Ireland. The deal, which includes the “Stormont brake” giving the UK a veto on new EU law applying to Northern Ireland, is the subject of a vote on Wednesday.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson stated that, while representing real progress, the “brake” does not deal with the fundamental issue of the imposition of EU law by the Protocol. The rejection of the deal by the DUP will undermine its credibility and hurt Mr Sunak. However, it won’t prevent the deal from passing or being implemented. The DUP’s boycott of Stormont over the Northern Ireland Protocol is embarrassing for the Prime Minister. Despite planning to vote against the deal, the DUP will continue to discuss the new Windsor Framework with the Government.

Ian Paisley Jr, the MP for North Antrim, also confirmed that he would vote against the agreement, stating that it was old substance dressed up in a new package with a ribbon around it and didn’t cut the mustard. The DUP’s rejection of the deal could prove influential with Tory backbenchers in the European Research Group. Nonetheless, the Government has warned that the deal will go ahead, with or without their support.
