Ex-cabinet minister Andrew Mitchell sues The Sun newspaper over the ‘plebgate’ report which claimed that chief whip called police officers “plebs”.
Tory MP Mitchell was forced to step down from the designation of chief whip in October after police accused him for verbally abusing them when an officer did not permit him from cycle out of the main gates of Downing Street last year.
The politician has issued a libel writ against the News International title, which first reported the affair in September. Mr. Mitchell had always denied the allegation of using the word “pleb” during the altercation.
It has been reported: “The writ is to address the campaign of vilification by the Sun newspaper against him.
“He felt that a point had to be made. It is always risky suing newspapers but he felt he had no alternative.”
According to the reports, four people including three police officers have been arrested as part of this incident’s investigation.
Scotland Yard has said that evidence linked to the investigation into the incident have been passed to the prosecutors.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has also confirmed receive a file from Scotland Yard in relation to the investigation.
The Sun spokesperson has replied: “We stand by our story and will defend this claim vigorously”.
