Former Home Secretary, Jack StrawFormer home secretary Jack Straw has urged the government to inquire why the Met Police investigation into the “plebgate” incident has suffered from “inordinate and unjustified delays.”

Mr. Straw has said that the unreasonable delays in investigation are in inappropriate and risking the image of the police into disgrace.

The ex-home secretary has stated: “We’re not police officers, we’re not investigators.

“What I’ve said in my letter to Theresa May is that whilst as the Home Secretary, as I know very well, it’s not appropriate to seek to influence the outcome of an investigation, it is certainly appropriate, certainly in my experience a lot, to find out what is going on in an investigation.

“In particular why delays are taking place, which frankly have the risk of bringing the police into some level of disrepute and that is a responsibility of the Home Secretary.”

The incident happened on 19 September last year when Andrew Mitchell was forbid by police to wheel his bike through the main Downing Street gates.

Mr. Mitchell had resigned from the post of Conservative chief whip a month after the instance. He had admitted swearing at the officers but always denied the newspaper claims of calling them “plebs”.

Mr. Straw’s letter comes after the same concerns had been raised by former director of public prosecutions Lord Macdonald and ex-Conservative leader Michael Howard regarding the length of investigation.

The Metropolitan Police have defended the prolonged inquiry by telling that investigation is complicated and will “take as long as is necessary”, while the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is supervising two investigations into the incident, has said “all that can be done to conclude the investigation is being done”.
