Microsoft and Google agree to adopt measure in order to control online child abuse image search on Monday after both companies have developed new software intended to block child porn from more than 100,000 unique searches, in reply to increasing political and public pressure.

The leading U.S. tech companies had made the declaration before an internet safety summit at Downing Street.

Google Executive chairman, Eric Schmidt has said more than 200 Google staff were working to identify several methods to tackle the illegal images’ problem during the past three months.

Mr. Schmidt has told: “While society will never wholly eliminate such depravity, we should do everything in our power to protect children from harm.”

He has added: “We’ve fine-tuned Google Search to prevent links to child sexual abuse material from appearing in our results.”

The other technology giant, Microsoft’s spokesperson has said: “Increased collaboration (with government and industry bodies)… is the best way to combat this vile content.”

The restrictions are planned to be implemented first in the U.K., before being expanded to other English-speaking countries and 158 other languages in the coming six months.

Prime Minister David Cameron who has been pushing for action on indecent online images has welcomed this move as “significant progress”, even if critiques have warned that the efforts would affect only a small fraction of the 1.2 trillion Google searches conducted annually.

Mr. Cameron had also shown willingness to work with the National Crime Agency (NCA) in order to resort to legislation if the companies remained unable to prevent online child abuse material being blocked.

Mr. Cameron had also told when he called on internet giants to tackle child abuse images earlier this year in June, the companies had claimed that it “couldn’t be done, shouldn’t be done”.

However, the new technology of Google will also enable it to clean up thousands of copies of an illegal video in one click.
