U.S. Defence Chief Robert GatesThe Ex-U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates has warned Britain on Thursday that military cuts will diminish it’s capability on world stage limiting U.K.’s scope to be a full time ally of the United States.

Britain is the world’s fourth largest military spender after the United States, China and Russia but it plan to cut the army staff by 20,000 soldiers over this decade while its navy will lose 6,000 personnel and its air force 5,000 amid the efforts to cut budget deficit.

Mr. Gates, who served under U.S. presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, has remarked as U.K. military spending will face almost eight percent reduction in the five years to 2015.

Mr. Gates has told: “With the fairly substantial reductions in defence spending in Great Britain, what we’re finding is that it won’t have full spectrum capabilities and the ability to be a full partner as they have been in the past.”

He has emphasized that Britain’s lack of a fully operational aircraft carrier as one of the decisions which “at the end of the day, matter.”

Full spectrum capabilities used to denote the ability to fight across air, land and sea.

The cuts in Britain have caused unrest among some senior military personnel and members of the Conservative Party, which leads the coalition government.

The U.K. Ministry of Defence spokesperson has insisted that thaeir armed forces will remain highly capable despite the spending cuts, and says Britain still has “the fourth largest defence budget in the world and the best-trained and best-equipped armed forces outside the U.S.”

During the past, Mr. Gates remained complainant of falling European military spending, a problem that has now disclosed as Washington also deals with its own budgetary pressures and attempts to shift more of its defence focus to Asia.

In the event of Iraq and Afghanistan recent wards, Britain has supported the United States as their closest companions.
