Labour party stood victorious in Wythenshawe and Sale East by-electionIn Wythenshawe and Sale East by-election, Labour party win convincingly while Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservatives were pushed into third place by the eurosceptic UK Independence Party ahead of European polls in May, according to the results revealed on Friday.

The opposition Labour party’s candidate Mike Kane grabbed the victory in Manchester with 55 percent of ballots in a vote triggered by the death of Labour MP Paul Goggins, who had represented the area since 1997.

However, Nigel Farage’s anti-EU and anti-immigration UKIP’s John Bickley had made a “massive progress” as the party received an increased vote from 3.4 percent in 2010 to 18 percent to get a second place, ahead of the ruling Conservatives who dealt a latest blow by winning only 15 percent of the vote.

The Liberal Democrats of Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, the coalition partner with the Conservatives, got just five percent and lost their deposit for the ninth time since the last general election in 2010.

However, a turnout of 28.2 percent for the by-election raises concerns of politicians from established parties.

Still Mr. Cameron refused to accept that the result was a breakthrough for UKIP, who are seeking to increase their tally of nine European members of parliament in elections in May, and to win their first seat in the British parliament in the next general election in May 2015.

The Prime minister has told: “Obviously, one would prefer to come second rather than third, but I don’t think this is a particularly surprising result in Labour holding this seat.

“I don’t think it was the sort of breakthrough that people were talking about.”

While Labour leader Ed Miliband has denied Mr. Cameron’s claim that Labour’s win in the Wythenshawe and Sale East by-election was not a big deal.

Mr. Miliband has said it was “very good” for his party, citing the fact that the Conservative share of the vote in the constituency has dramatically decreased since 1997.

He has indicated: “We added to our share of the vote, we gained support, I am delighted by the result.

“What you saw was the governing parties – the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats – in total retreat.”

UKIP also got ahead of the Conservatives by achieving second place during February 2013 by-election in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

Mr. Farage expressed his happiness and said the result represented “really good solid, steady progress”.
