British PM David Cameron with Gary BarlowPrime Minister David Cameron has dismissed the calls being faced by Take That star Gary Barlow to return “Order of the British Empire” (OBE) after it emerged he invested in a tax avoidance scheme.

The three band members are expected to be ordered to repay more than £20m to HM Revenue & Customs after a court judge found an investment scheme in which they invested through Icebreaker Management, was mainly intended to avoid tax.

The Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Labour MP Margaret Hodge has suggested Mr Barlow “might want to show a bit of contrition by giving back his OBE”.

The Conservative Charlie Elphicke has also backed Mr Hodge’s words by saying, the people “who have seriously abused the tax system should be stripped of their honours”.

Liberal Democrat chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander has also criticised by saying: “People who don’t pay the taxes that they should undermine the economy, damage our public services and place an extra, unfair burden on hard-working families and companies who play by the rules.”

While condemning Mr Barlow’s involvement in fraud, the Prime minister has said it was not “necessary” to remove Barlow’s honour because he had “done a huge amount for the country” and “raised money for charity”.

Barlow – one of Britain’s biggest pop stars was given an honour for his services to the entertainment industry and to charity in 2012.
