Shadow education secretary Tristram HuntShadow education secretary Tristram Hunt has accused the government of “incompetence” over its handling of extremism in schools after secondary school in Birmingham failed to combat extremist threats.

According to a report by the education watchdog Ofsted into the ‘Trojan Horse’ inquiry, likely to be on Monday, is expected to bring more embarrassment for the government; as Ofsted will downgrade the Park View Academy to inadequate which was rated as outstanding in 2012.

The education watchdog began inspections after claims emerge that hardline Muslims were trying to take over Birmingham schools.

Education Secretary Michael Gove had ordered the action following the emergence of the Trojan Horse letter – which is widely believed to be a hoax.

The document showed suspicion that there was an established regime among a group of conservative Islamists to usurp school governing bodies.

However, the former leader of Respect and a former Birmingham city councillor, Salma Yaqoob has said the inspections were not unbiased.

Ms Yaqoob has said: “I’m a Birmingham mum, I don’t want to see extremism in Birmingham, I don’t want to see any extremism in schools, yet I have still to find any shred of evidence what extremism plot was going on.”

She has also raised questions over the inspections made as she has told: “The kids of Birmingham are already damned as being extremist.

“One of the [Ofsted] inspectors asked a girl who was sitting next to a Muslim boy whether she felt intimidated.

“The assumption being that a Year 11 Muslim boy is, by virtue of being a Muslim boy, intimidating.”

In this wake, Mr Hunt has blamed Michael Gove of allowing education to be “skewed”, school staff subjected to gender discrimination and children exposed to extremist views in Birmingham, and called on him to come to the House of Commons on Monday to explain his lack of action on warnings about extremist schools to MPs.

Mr Hunt has also criticised the school inspection criteria as he has said: “I don’t think the inspection criteria is fit for purpose, in the kind of schooling we want.”

“You can’t run all these schools from behind a desk in Whitehall so we need local systems of oversight and accountability.”
