Former home secretary Leon BrittanThe Home Office faces explanation calls over 1980s dossier regarding alleged paedophiles at Westminster which was lost or destroyed by officials.

A Labour MP Simon Danczuk has asked the former home secretary Leon Brittan to clear his position by sharing “what he knows” about the file, which was prepared by the late Tory MP Geoffrey Dickens and which the Government has admitted appears to have since been destroyed.

Mr Danczuk has said a 50-page dossier of allegations – which is believed to contain information about suspected VIP paedophile rings and the abuse of boys in care homes, was presented to the then home secretary Mr Brittan between 1983 and 1985.

Last year, the Home Office had ordered an independent review into the matter and the disappearance of dossier.

Mr Brittan, 74, had initially stated to have passed the file to officials in November 1983 and heard nothing more. However his statement proved to be incorrect during the internal inquiry in 2013 that included a letter he sent to Mr Dickens that showed this statement to be incorrect.

Afterwards, Mr Brittan had admitted that he had misremembered and in fact the material was assessed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the time and handed to police.

Mr Danczuk has then called the Home Office to clarify the action taken by police and other authorities on the basis of the DPP’s assessment while urging the department to publish the independent review findings in full, rather than just the executive summaries.
