Prime Minister David Cameron has announced an emergency legislation on Thursday that has to be passed through parliament in order to allow police and security agencies to maintain their access to data related to phone and internet records after all the three main political parties in Britain backed the move.

Following the cross-party backing in the House of Commons, the new law will aid law-enforcement agencies to track and catch terrorists and other criminals. It will enshrine powers into U.K. law that were struck down by a European Court of Justice ruling in April.

Mr Cameron has told that “urgent action” is required “to protect the public after the European Court of Justice struck down existing surveillance powers.”

The emergency powers have been defended by the Prime minister and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who said that it was not about introducing new snooping laws but about maintaining existing capabilities.

Mr Cameron has stated: “It is the first duty of government to protect our national security and to act quickly when that security is compromised. As events in Iraq and Syria demonstrate, now is not the time to be scaling back on our ability to keep our people safe.”

Home Secretary Theresa May has warned the ministers opposing the move if Parliament did not act swiftly against a European Court of Justice ruling which raised the prospect that communications companies could start deleting crucial material used to tackle terrorists and serious criminals, then many innocent lives would be lost.

However, opponents of the move, including civil liberties campaigners, have warned that the new powers will be used to invade the privacy laws of people.
