London Mayor Boris JohnsonLondon Mayor Boris Johnson has confirmed his intention to stand as an MP for the Conservative Party at the general election 2015.

The London mayor stepped down from the Commons after taking the position as mayor in 2008, but he has told an audience at the Bloomberg headquarters in London on Wednesday he will look to run for parliament in next year’s national election.

Mr Johnson has said: “I haven’t got a particular seat lined up but I do think that in all probability, since you can’t do these things furtively, I will try to find somewhere to stand in 2015.”

The mayor has also added: “It may well go wrong, but the likelihood is that I will have to give it a crack.”

However, Mr Johnson has not revealed the seat on which he will stand to fight, although one possibility is Uxbridge, where John Randall, the Tory whip, is standing down.

After the announcement, Labour PPC for Uxbridge & South Ruislip, Chris Summers has said he “would relish the chance” to take on the Mayor in a “head-to-head debate” as he is “up for the challenge”.

Prime Minister David Cameron has welcomed Mr Johnson’s fresh decision, even though it is likely to reignite the long speculation about his future as Conservative leader.

The Tory leader, who is currently on family holidays in Portugal, has tweeted: “Great news that Boris plans to stand at next year’s general election – I’ve always said I want my star players on the pitch.”

The mayor has stated regarding the rumours over seeking to become party leader: “I think it’s highly unlikely that that will happen because there’s no vacancy. I think David Cameron has been a brilliant prime minister.”

He has added: “When David Cameron finally steps down, in 2030 or whenever, it may be that there’s a vacancy, but it will probably be filled by a person who’s a teenager now.”
