German Chancellor Angela MerkelGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday that she would opt to withdraw her support for U.K. over European Union membership than compromise on Britain’s immigration stance affecting the principle of free movement.

The comments made in the wake of reports of German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel that Mrs Merkel has cautioned Mr Cameron that his drive to curb immigration from other EU states is pushing Britain towards “a point of no return” on the road to exit from Europe.

The Conservative party leader wants to make an attempt to renegotiate the terms of the U.K.’s continued membership before holding an in-out referendum over EU membership if his party gets re-elected in general election 2015.

Mr Cameron is facing mounted pressure to tighten Britain’s immigration controls to counter the rise of U.K. Independence Party, but has yet to spell out the plans to meet the goal. Der Spiegel has quoted unnamed sources within Mrs Merkel’s office and foreign ministry as saying that if Mr Cameron demanded numerical limits on EU migration, “there will be no going back” and Germany would cease doing all it can to convince Britain to remain a member of the EU.

However, the British chancellor George Osborne has dismissed the Der Spiegel story as speculation about how Germany may react to a future U.K. policy shift.

But Mr Osborne has insisted ministers would act in the national interest in addressing public concerns about immigration.

He has told that concerns about abuses of the benefit system were causing great amount of dissatisfaction but the U.K. would approach future negotiations in a “calm and rational” way.
