Labour leader Ed MilibandLabour leader Ed Miliband has dismissed reports of unrest among Labour backbench MPs that led to devising a plot to oust him from the party leadership to avoid defeat in next year’s general elections as “nonsense”.

The rumours are there that at least three Labour MPs have told the chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party(PLP), Dave Watts that Mr Miliband should step aside to allow a swift contest to find a more able successor for the sake of party.

A senior MP has told: “There is a crisis of confidence in him in the PLP.”

However, during a visit to Northamptonshire on Friday, the leader of the opposition has denied the existence of any plot over the party leadership change and said: “This is nonsense. My focus, the Labour Party’s focus, is on the country and the things that matter to the country.

“That’s the cost-of-living crisis, it’s the NHS, it’s the prospects for the next generation.”

Mr Miliband has added: “The Labour Party’s focus is on the country and is going to remain on the country because there are huge issues that our country faces” which require more attention to get resolved.

Several Labour MPs admitted morale in the PLP is at “an all-time low”. In this wake, a source has indicated that the critics plan to persuade 100 backbenchers to sign a letter calling for a change of leadership. They hope the Shadow Cabinet would refuse to rally behind Mr Miliband – in effect, a vote of no-confidence that would force him out. If that happened, critics claimed, the shadow cabinet would appoint a new leader in a “coronation” to avoid a divisive leadership contest.

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has strongly denied of being involved in the scheme to replace takeover Labour leadership after the reports emerged that Ms Cooper and Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham have struck a “non-aggression pact”.

But a spokesman for Ms Cooper has rejected the rumour, saying: “The spreading of lies like this only damages the Labour Party and should be seen as exactly what it is – complete and utter garbage. Yvette, the shadow cabinet and the party are united behind Ed’s leadership.”
