U.K. Treasury has allocated £2.3 billion worth fund on Tuesday, for 1,400 flood defence projects across the country to provide better protection to hundreds of thousands of homes from future flooding.
The vital investment will help prevent £30bn damage in areas including the Thames and Humber Estuaries over the period of next six years.
The Treasury has ensured that the arrangements will also aid to give extra protection to 300,000 homes. The major projects include £42m funding for Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme, £80m for the Humber Estuary and over £17m for Tonbridge, Yalding and the surrounding communities.
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander has defined the investment as “an unprecedented, long-term capital investment in flood defences”.
Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss has said: “We know how vital it is to tackle flood risk and from the Humber Estuary in the North-East to Thames Estuary in the South this ambitious programme of defences will reduce the threat of flooding for hundreds of thousands of people.
“This long-term investment will allow businesses and communities to thrive and local economies to flourish by delivering greater protection from flood risk over the next 6 years.
“We are spending £3.2 billion in flood management and defences over the course of this parliament – half a billion pounds more than in the previous parliament. This, combined with the record level of investment in capital we have set out today, will improve protection to 465,000 homes and businesses by the end of the decade.”
Friends of the Earth (FOE) have said documents from regional flood and coastal committees showed around £1.6bn of viable projects that did not go operational.
FOE Campaigner Guy Shrubsole has said: “A year after Britain’s wettest winter ever, the Chancellor’s leaked flood defence plans simply don’t hold water.
“Faced with rising sea levels, the Government needs to be investing far more in flood defences to protect households and prevent climate change from the outset.”
Shadow environment secretary Maria Eagle has said: “Communities at risk of flooding won’t buy Government spin on what is simply a re-announcement of capital funding confirmed a year ago.
“This is not new money – at the beginning of this parliament David Cameron cut the flood protection budget by over a £100 million a year. As a result we are playing catch-up on flood defences. The Committee on Climate on Change has already said that the Government’s plans could leave 80,000 additional properties at serious risk of flooding.”
