A former Plaid Cymru leader has apologised on Wednesday for “any offence caused” following a comparison made over the jobs provided by Britain’s Trident submarine defence system to the workers in Nazi’s notorious death camp.
Lord Wigley has made this shocking comment just hours after the world gathered to mark 70 years since the end of the Holocaust.
The remark came in the wake of reports – denied by the Government – that the nuclear weapons system could be transferred from Scotland to Wales.
When the ex-leader of the Welsh nationalist party was asked by the reporters if the employment opportunities would be positive following relocation of U.K. nuclear base from Scotland to Wales, he used the contrast with the Holocaust telling that all jobs are not good by nature.
Dafydd Wigley has said: “This week we have been remembering what happened in Germany before the war, no doubt there were many jobs provided in Auschwitz and places like that but that didn’t justify their existence, and neither does nuclear weapons justify having them in Pembrokeshire. The number of people that will be killed by Trident will be infinitely more.”
Afterwards, Lord Wigley has denied of making a moral comparison between the two, saying: “No, the point I was making was this, that you have to consider the nature of the work and not just that a job exists.”
Later, senior Plaid peer said sorry over his remarks, stating: “I am certainly sorry if my remarks were open to any misinterpretation and I apologise for any offence that has been caused.
“The point I was trying to make was that you can’t have jobs at any cost and I reiterate that.”
Former Welsh secretary and Tory MP for Clwyd West David Jones has called Lord Wigley’s comments “crass”, saying: “His remarks were crass and defensive, and while the apology is a bit mealy-mouthed, at least it is good that he has acknowledged they are offensive.”
